The Medical Code of Ethics was established in 1832 by the Elanite Board of Physicians. The Code covered the main tenants considered to be important by the EBP for all doctors to follow during their practice.
Physicians must support access to medical care for all people, especially regardless of class, occupation, and religious devotion; care must also be administered without judgment or condemnation from the physician.
Physicians must place their responsibility to the patient above all things. A physician must honor a patient’s direction for the course of their treatment over the opinions of themselves or others or outside influences. This includes respecting a client’s wish to access unconventional forms of treatment, to receive certain medical procedures, or to refuse other people’s access to themselves during any treatments.
Physicians must promote a patient's ability to choose the course of their own medical care and offer medical advice without judgment or pressure. Physicians must also ensure that a patient's ability to choose is not inappropriately influenced.
Physicians must avoid doing harm to their patients during the course of care, whenever it is possible. If any harm occurs during the course of treatment, it must be limited as much as possible with all attempts made to mitigate.
Physicians must communicate the course of care in language that is understood both by the patient and by any cooperating caregivers, medical attendants, or physicians. Clear communication must be given without judgment or condescension from the physician. Communication between physicians must be made with respect and with the goal of supporting the patient's health.
Physicians must report potential violations of the Elan Medical Code of Ethics to the Elanite Board of Physicians. Reports of violations are to be made to the Elanite Medical Board or to a representative with as much urgency and immediacy as possible. When the Elanite Board of Physicians cannot be quickly notified, then local law enforcement is to be notified in addition to the Elanite Board of Physicians.
Physicians must continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of medical advancements over the course of their career. Physicians are encouraged to be appraised of all medical advancements made in the field to the best of their ability.
Physicians must contribute their skills to the benefit of their community whenever possible. Physicians are likewise expected to make their advancements in the field accessible to the wider medical community and to the whole of Elan.
Physicians must prioritize their own health in order to ensure they are fully capable of being able to provide care to others. A physician should always steadfastly care for themselves, both physically and mentally, in order that they may provide the best care possible to others.
