Dorage, in contrast to Nepton’s stability, has been embroiled in conflict for much of the last forty years, beginning with an economic collapse leading to famine, then to a bloody and unrelenting civil war. As multiple factions rose and fell, the remains of the government struggled to retain any semblance of control over the populace, eventually erecting walls around a few small and loyal protectorates over which they were able to exert control. As infrastructure fell into disrepair and laws ceased to be enforced, Dorage gained a reputation as being a haven for brigandage and bootlegging, with individual settlements often acting as states in their own right, enforcing their own laws and sometimes even circulating their own currency. As the authority of Dorage’s hermit government dwindles, areas near Elan’s northern border have often had to deal with irregular militias, refugees, and other products of the conflict, particularly when winter temperatures drive many south to warmer climes in Killock and Abernathy.

Nepton, although being Elan’s one-time adversary in a territory war nearly a century ago, has become one of its closest allies in recent decades, with treaties and trade routes having been established across Elan’s southern border leading to lucrative economic advances for both nations. Nepton’s lush forests and humid climate have led them to great advances in agriculture and arboriculture, and the market for luxury goods and crops not available in Elan has boomed in the wake of the conflict. The Neptonite government, led by a council of 15 senior judges, reflects the population’s adherence to more traditional values and ways of life, and enacts changes at a far slower pace than that of Elan. While this has led to stability for the nation, some Neptonites migrate northward in search of a more accommodating culture.
In Thorpe Province, immigrants from both Dorage and Nepton have made their homes among the other citizens of Hargrove. Most Neptonites have arrived in Thorpe having spent a pretty penny on the trip there. Whether this was all they had saved or merely a coin from the coffers, the thrill of a new opportunity was the same for them as it was for their Elanite cohorts. Many Dorageans, meanwhile, often came with little to call their own, having arrived hoping that life in Hargrove might provide the safety and stability their homeland lacked. Although some slid back into rougher trades like bootlegging and crime, many Dorageans found success through their dedication and hard work, echoing their flag’s meaning: overcoming obstacles through struggle.
